Jan Stoter - Working Experience

Expertise: System design

I am an experienced system designer in the area of radio and telecommunication systems and have a background in ASIC, hardware development and digital signal processing. Throughout my career at Ericsson I have gained experience in leading multi-disciplinairy projects in the area of product development and Outsourcing of wireless telecommunication products. Here, I understood the practical use of following structured product development processes. I started my career as System Engineer, with several studies on the introduction of new services in DECT business cordless. This experience and understanding wireless communication standards became very useful when I joined Wireless Multimedia Research group, where I participated in several studies for other Ericsson departments. This work has resulted in a number of patents filings.
I continued this type of research work when I joined the Twente Institute for Wireless and Mobile Communications (WMC) in 2003. Most of this research was done in European and national funded projects.
Besides the production of a lot of papers, this work was characterized as architectural design for a Software platform and Personal Networking.

TODO: International experience Standardization
I have been actively involved in birth of the DECT standard for cordless communications and Ericsson's DECT business cordless system.

Multi-disciplinairy projects

Product development

During the period 1993-1996, I was responsible for the complete Product development cycle of Ericsson's second generation business cordless DECT handset. This involved the whole process from design until the pilot production in the main Ericsson production site in Kumla Sweden.

Outsourcing

In the period 1996 - 1998, I was responsible for the specification and outsourcing of the first Ericsson Home Cordless DECT system (DT230/260) in co-operation with a Danisch hardware supplier.

DECT Services

In the period 1998 - 2000, Study on new services for DECT Business Cordless, ISDN, WAP, SMS and Paging over DECT.

Studies in the field of Mobile Communications

In this period 2000-2003 Ericsson's Wireless Multimedia Research group, I participated in several studies:
Study on the effects of the TDD variant of the UMTS WCDMA standard on the physical layer design of the UMTS handset.
This study was carried out for the Ericsson Mobile Communications in Lund Sweden. Study and implementation of a operating framework for Software Defined Radio, SDR for the new generation UMTS basestation.
This study was carried out for Ericsson Communication Systems in Kumla Sweden.

Research assignments at WMC.

Geodes project for a power-aware network of radio nodes
Writing proposals for Dutch subsidized projects in the International Innovation (SI2) and PointOne programs. Architectural definition of a secure Personal Network and Federations of Personal Networks within the European Magnet Beyond project and the Dutch Freeband project: 'PNP2008'. Activities to commercialize the OSYRES middleware software. Technical responsible for the development of a multi-processor operating framework supporting dynamic function instantiation. This work was done within the European project: Smart ChipS for Smart Surroundings (4S). Project proposal for the Galileo (ESA) tender for the Design and Development of a Test User receiver for the new European GPS Satellite Navigation System.
